a button in the snow

beneath the redwood Michael

hidden in thick moss

a tiny tree frog elehna

shrinking in memory,

that afternoon we spent together

looking for buttercups Michael

in a corner of the shed

a dead hummingbird

still iridescent elehna

in my child’s upheld palm

a small wonder Michael

giant kelp bed—

a seal pup at play

diving in, diving out elehna
