Rengay Afterword

First published as an explanatory afterword in Onderstroom / Undercurrent, a bilingual (Dutch and English) rengay collection by Marleen Hulst and Bouwe Brouwer (Emmeloord, The Netherlands: Marginale Uitgeverij De Oude Zeeman, 2012), page 60. It is not strictly true that the last verse needs to connect with the first one, but in some rengay this happens to be the case and can be a successful technique.

Rengay

The rengay is a contemporary Western version of the Japanese renga or renku, invented by the American writer/photographer Garry Gay. It is a collection of six haiku-like links, written alternatively by two (or three) writers. Each rengay has one theme that is highlighted in different ways. Each verse has a certain connection with the consecutive verse. Finally, the last verse should in some way connect again with the beginning haiku.

Rengay
